WDBJ7: Gillespie gearing up, brings campaign for Governor to western Virginia

VINTON, Va. (WDBJ7) With the presidential election is now behind us, the candidates for Virginia Governor are gearing up for the 2017 campaign.

Republican Ed Gillespie joined Delegate Chris Head in Vinton Wednesday afternoon, helping to deliver gifts for the “Be a Santa to a Senior” Program.

Gillespie is one of four Republicans expected to run in the GOP primary next June.

“I think we’re going to have a competition and a contest for the Republican party nomination that’s going to energize a lot of people and get them involved in our process,” Gillespie told WDBJ7. “I think you’re going to see a very big primary for the Republican party nomination for Governor. I think that’s good for us in the general election.”

Gillespie said he is the candidate who can bring the party together.

“I’ve got a big organization and the resources to get our message out,” Gillespie said, “but most importantly I’m running on the principles we all share and the specific policies that I think not only Republicans, but Independents and a lot of Democrats are going to embrace as well.”
