There were a number of big developments in the campaign for governor this weekend that you may have missed so we want to get you up to speed.
First, Ed and the other Republicans running for governor gathered for the final debate before the June 13th primary. The debate, hosted by the Virginia Tea Party Patriots Federations was in Goochland on Saturday afternoon.
While Ed’s opponents rehashed their same, old, failed attacks, Ed kept his answers focused on his policies, like his 10% across the board tax cut for all Virginians, and exposing the Democrat candidates – Lieutenant Governor Ralph Northam and Congressman Tom Perriello (aka “Left and Lefter”) – and their liberal, out-of-touch policies.
During the debate, Ed announced the support of 4 of Prince William County’s Supervisors as well as Prince William County Sheriff Glendell Hill, who had previously endorsed Corey Stewart. This major announcement signals the unifying impact of Ed’s incredibly well-run campaign.
Ed won the straw poll following the debate with 53% of the vote, highlighting his strong support from Virginia’s conservative grassroots activists.
- Ed Gillespie – 125 votes
- Corey Stewart – 79 votes
- Frank Wagner – 20 votes
- Undecided – 14 votes
After the debate, Ed made his way to the Deep Run High School in Henrico for the Greater Richmond Telugu Association cultural celebration.
Then it was off to Chesapeake, where Ed participated in another candidates’ forum, but unfortunately one of Ed’s opponents was a no-show after previously committing to attend. It would have been the 19th time that all three candidates appeared together.
The Chesapeake Republican Committee also held a straw poll on Saturday, and Ed won with an overwhelming 78.4% of the vote.
- Ed Gillespie – 80 votes
- Corey Stewart – 0 votes
- Frank Wagner – 22 votes
