RICHMOND, VA – Longtime conservative leader, 2014 U.S. Senate candidate and 2017 Republican candidate for Governor Ed Gillespie released the following statement Tuesday on the proposal from Governor Terry McAuliffe and Lieutenant Governor Ralph Northam to repeal Virginia’s photo identification requirement.
“The McAuliffe-Northam proposal to repeal our commonsense photo ID requirement is out-of-step with the people of the Commonwealth. Virginia just finished a presidential election without any major problems involving photo ID requirements, which have been upheld by two federal courts. This is a responsible law that secures the integrity of our elections and guarantees fair and equitable ballot access for all voters, despite the alarmist and false rhetoric of some. As governor, I will work with the General Assembly to protect this sensible law and guarantee that Virginia’s elections are fair, free, safe and secure.”
