Monmouth University Poll Shows Virginia Governor’s Race Tied 44-44

Poll Shows Republican Party Unified with 91% of Republicans Backing Gillespie

Northam Losing Support From Democrats

In their first polling of the 2017 Virginia governor’s race, Monmouth University today released a poll showing Republican nominee Ed Gillespie tied (44% – 44%) with Democratic nominee Lieutenant Governor Ralph Northam. The polling further shows Ed Gillespie winning a greater majority of support from Republicans (91%) than Northam is with Democrats (88%), and also winning Independent voters over Northam (42% – 38%).

“This is a clear indication that Virginians are continuing to rally around Ed’s positive vision for the Commonwealth, while Lieutenant Governor Northam is struggling to energize voters with a campaign driven entirely by reaction to federal issues,” said campaign manager Chris Leavitt. “Virginians want a governor’s race about Virginia, and this poll confirms that voters believe Ed is the candidate who will get Virginia’s economy growing by cutting taxes, raising take-home pay and reducing burdensome regulations.”
