Richmond Times-Dispatch: South Carolina governor, Gillespie set policy discussion in Short Pump

South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley will join Ed Gillespie, a 2017 GOP gubernatorial hopeful, in Short Pump this afternoon for a policy discussion sponsored by Gillespie’s political action committee.

State Sen. Siobhan S. Dunnavant, R-Henrico, will moderate the 3:30 p.m. discussion sponsored by the Let’s Grow, Virginia! PAC at the Hilton Richmond Hotel & Spa Short Pump.

Haley, governor since 2011, may be best known for her 2015 call to remove the Confederate battle flag from the statehouse grounds in Columbia after the massacre of nine black worshippers at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston.

After photos were published depicting the alleged killer holding a Confederate flag, Haley held a news conference to call for “removing a symbol that divides us.” She was joined by South Carolina politicians, black and white, including Republican Sens. Lindsey Graham and Tim Scott and Rep. Jim Clyburn, a top Democrat.

Haley, the state’s first female governor, is one of two Indian-American governors, along with Bobby Jindal of Louisiana, who left office in January. She has often been mentioned as a possible GOP candidate for vice president, but has disavowed interest in the position.
